Defeating The Watchtower - What Does This Mean?

i actually wrote this post in response to a poster recently dealing with the 'defeating' of the wts.. i have started a new topic with the post as i would like to hear opinions of what xjw's and others view as a 'defeated' watchtower.. "i am not quite sure what we all want from the wts.

what does a person mean by 'defeating' the watchtower?.

destroying it, selling its buildings, giving the cash back to the people who bought them?

I don't know if I would want the religion to be defeated. But I would like for the Watchtower God to start writing things that would benefit it's followers. Because we know whatever they put in those publications, the followers will except immediately without hesitation.

As others have mentioned to do away with disfellowshipping, to allow members who no longer believe to walk away with dignity, to allow children to participate in sports, to sing in a xmas pageant (out of respect for other people's beliefs, there are alot jewish children, budhist, etc. who partipate in different activities), to learn about other faiths without talking negatively, to encourage nuturing god given talents (sports, singing, academics, etc.), to treat women equal, etc.

These are the things that I feel would make the religion human. So those changes with their wonderful paradise package would make this a great religion.

is it because we're a cynical lot?.

maybe because we were the first generation of latch-key kids who learned how to raise ourselves?.

what is it that makes it so 'hard to lie to a gen xer?

I think this is a interesting point about the Gen Xer being the end for the Borg.

In my experience, I'm 34 yrs. old and not one person that I grew up with that are male, are in a position of authority at the hall. They pretty much still seem like children and basically are doing the same things we were doing when we were teenagers. And the females are not pioneering or doing what you would consider a mature christian (the JW definition) to do.

So what is the average age for elders, ministerial servants in your former congregations. The youngest in my congreation is 40, but the average age is 55yrs.

Did you Believe

as an active jw, did you really ever believe that you would survive armageddon?

with me, i served as an elder, regular pioneer, was over the book room at district conventions, but i always felt it was not enough, i was never real sure i would survive the big day of god almighty!!

the reason i ask y'all is, i don't think you can feel real sure in a organization that is legalistic and work orientated .

Feeling unworthy was the catalyst to my being freed from the Tower. Because of being afraid of the big A coming (in 1998 I was sure it was going to be here before the new millenium) and I knew I was surely set for destruction, being that I was married to a worldly man. And with being married to him I participated in some activities that are definitely not what spiritually strong people do.

So I fell into a deep depression. Which I now see was the best thing that happened to me. Because I was able to get therapy and have my eyes opened to what a horrific religion I had been raised in.

Pet Peeves

here's one that just happened at work that is an annoyance for me: when you are speaking and the person interrupts the conversation with a corny play on words or the like.

for example, "i had to sit on the phone on hold for about 5 minutes, waiting .

Should gays be allowed to adopt?

i watched an interesting program last night (i believe on primetime), wherein diane sawyers interviewed rosie o'donnell.. the topic centered on gays and adoption.

rosie recently came out of the closet in order to extend her support to florida gays who are prohibited by law to adopt.

rosie, herself, has three children.. some of these gays, by the way, are foster parents.

It's not about being alright or supportive of your child being gay. That is who they are. You do not have a choice, as well as the child had not a choice in being WHO they are. You must love your children, no matter what. So the only thing that I wish for my children is for them to be safe and HAPPY. I REALLY don't wish for them to chose a hetero or homo mate, as well as I don't wish which nationality, etc., but hope that they find someone who make them happy.

And I hope you find happiness with yourself. From you post you come across as a person worthy of love. So start with yourself.

You state that in your personal observation that something was missing from the homosexual parenting. What was missing?

In my experience of homosexual parents (my cousin and former neighbors), they were wonderful parents. And I personally feel the kids have an advantage over children coming from heterosexual parents. They are not raised with bigotry. The can truly learn to accept people for who they are.

I don't want to sound negative, but from you post I get the impression that you are not happy with yourself.

And I know that being homosexual is hard because of the prejudices. But I would have to say that I REALLY would be alright if my child is homosexual. Because that is who they are, plain and simple. Because I am a mother of minority men, I understand being afraid of ignorant people. I say a prayer everytime I give my son the keys to my car. But I still would not want him to be any other way. So I just teach him how to overcome anything he may encounter.

I watched the program and thought that it was stupid for the State of Florida to allow people to keep children as foster children, but then to deny them the opportunity to adopt.

No, I don't think heterosexuals make better parents. If you noticed on that program, all of the children come from heterosexual households.

I agree with LB the best place for children is a place of love.

Celebrity Boxing anyone?

i was wondering who might have caught the celebrity boxing match on the fox network last night, and what you thought about it?

i saw it, and have to say i enjoyed it, as sickening as it was to me.

reality tv has reached a new low in my book, but the low happens to be disturbingly funny.

Yes, I hate to admit it, but I did watch. And here is the real embrassing part -- I actually enjoyed it. My family and I were in tears with laughter.

I actually think my son would be a great talent scout for that show. He suggested Hillary Clinton -vs- Monica Lewisky and many more that I cannot recall right now.

Alternatives to JWs

since there are new people coming to this board on fairly regular basis with questions about the jw religion, i thought i'd pose this topic.. many, upon leaving the organization, don't really know where to turn for guidance.

"look to yourself" doesn't really cut it when you've been told how to think your whole life.. many choose atheism, which is fine.

however, for those still looking for a religion, here is a site that lists many of the worlds major religious movements.

I love their creed of LOVE first. And that you are SHOULD have you own beliefs.

Great Joke to play on a DUB

this is something that we do at hockey tournaments as a joke but i was thinking how much fun it would be to play on a jw.what we do is in a restauraunt when were all sitting down someone tells the waitress that it is someones birthday when there gone to the can or sitting at another table.when dinner is done and time for desert a stream of waitresses and waiters come and sing to the surprised person and it`s not even there birthday but play along anyways.. so as you know how much the jw`s like to go out to dinner after the assemblies and halloween,scope out these places plant the info on the waitress and sit back and watch you`ll be on the floor laughing your ass off!!

!i think the assembly location would be best with a full house of dub`s.

This actually happened to my sister. Before I was baptized, I was dating this gentlemen who did not know that JW didn't celebrate birthdays. My sisters told me that they and a bunch of JW were going to be eating at Chi Chi Restaurant and we could meet them there. So when we get there, the JW's a jokingly saying Happy Birthday to my sister (it was here birthday).

My boyfriend is a smoker and being that we are dining with a bunch of JW, we are seated in the non-smoking section. He excuses himself to go smoke in the bar area. While he is away he ask the waitress to surprise my sister with the happy birthday song and cake.

Well after the plates are cleared, we hear all of this noise heading toward our table. And if you have ever been in Chi Chi's you know how loud they sing the birthday song.

We are all laughed until we cried. My boyfriend was so embarassed, but laughed also.
